The record dates Still Life with Coffee Mill, Pipe Case and Jug to 1884. Six of the twenty-five works this catalogue dates to that year are titled as still lifes, and the objects named in their titles are domestic and few — bottles, a flowerpot of brushes, a jug. The type accounts for sixty-six titles across the decade, which makes it the most persistent format in the catalogue.

The same format, ten years apart
Still lifes appear in every period of this chronology: two dated 1881, twelve in 1885, sixteen in 1887, thirteen in 1888, seven in 1890. Because the subject stays constant while the years do not, the format is the cleanest available control for what the arrangement claims to show. Set the brown of this 1884 entry beside the still lifes of the Paris and Arles years and the difference belongs to the date rather than to the subject. That is a comparison the record supports; anything about intention behind it is not, and is left out.
