The only 1884 title that names Nuenen
The record dates Congregation Leaving the Reformed Church in Nuenen to 1884, the middle year of the first period in this catalogue's chronology. Five titles here name Nuenen, and this is the only one of them dated 1884; the other four are dated 1885. The place gives the period its name, but it appears in the titles themselves only five times in 610 works.
What the record gives
The canvas measures 32 by 41 centimetres, a small horizontal, and it is held by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The measured palette reads as yellow.
A yellow reading in a brown year
That measurement is the unusual part. Of the twenty-five works dated 1884, eighteen return brown as a dominant family and six return yellow. By 1888 the counts have swapped: three brown against ninety-three yellow, out of 135. A single entry cannot carry an argument, but it can sit visibly on the wrong side of its year, and the value of arranging a catalogue by date is that the reader can see which side that is. Seven titles here name a church, spread from 1882 to 1890; this is the earliest of them in the Nuenen period.
