The record dates Avenue of Poplars at Sunset to 1884. Poplars are named in four titles in this catalogue: one dated 1884, one dated 1885 and two dated 1889. That is a rare shape here — a motif that appears in the Dutch years, disappears through Paris, and returns in Saint-Remy under a different sky. Most subjects in this catalogue stay in the period where they start.
What the record gives
The work is held by the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, the second largest holding here after the Van Gogh Museum. No dimensions are recorded. The measured palette reads as brown.
Brown at the top of its curve
Brown dominates eighteen of the twenty-five works dated 1884 and six of the 116 dated 1889. The poplars therefore return, five years on, into a completely different measured environment: same noun, different chromatic year. That comparison is the whole reason this site arranges the paintings by period rather than by motif. Sunset is in the title and not in the measurement, and this page does not treat one as evidence of the other.
