The village that names the period
Nuenen gives the first period of this chronology its name, yet it appears in only five of the 610 titles: one dated 1884 and four dated 1885. After 1885 the word never occurs again. That is the cleanest kind of period marker a catalogue can hold — a place-name with a hard stop — and it is why a large 1885 canvas naming the village is a more useful entry than its size alone would suggest. The lane itself, and where it ran, the record does not describe.
