Three families in one measurement

The record dates Still Life: Vase with Cornflowers and Poppies to 1887. The measured palette reads as green, turquoise and indigo. Both of the rarer families in that reading are scarce here: turquoise dominates fourteen works in the whole catalogue and indigo eight, and 1887 is the peak year for both, with four and three respectively.

What the record gives

The canvas measures 80 by 67 centimetres, an upright, and it is held by the Triton Foundation in Rotterdam — the only entry in this catalogue from that collection.

Flowers in a vase, counted by year

Thirty-five titles here name a vase, and their distribution is not even: one dated 1884, fifteen dated 1886, seven dated 1887, four in 1888, two in 1889 and six in 1890. The format concentrates in the Paris period and thins afterwards. Three titles name cornflowers, one each in 1886, 1887 and 1890. A catalogue can put those counts beside one another because every entry carries a date; it cannot say why the counts move, and this page does not try.
