The record dates Field with Two Rabbits to 1889. Rabbits are named in one title in the whole catalogue, and this is it. The chronology's fourth period, Saint-Remy, is dominated by fields, olives and enclosures, and a small animal subject inside it is an outlier by count rather than by any judgement of quality.
What the record gives
The canvas measures 40.5 by 32.5 centimetres, a small upright, and it is held by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The measured palette reads as ochre and yellow.
The best-documented year in the catalogue
Of the 116 works dated 1889, ninety-nine carry a recorded size — the highest count of any year here, and a far better rate than 1885, where twenty of seventy are measured. Across the whole catalogue 333 of 610 entries have a size on the card. The unevenness matters for reading the chronology: the early years are thinner in the record as well as thinner in output, and a claim about the Dutch work rests on a much smaller documented base than the same claim about Saint-Remy.
