Arles, and a title spelled two ways
The record dates Alychamps, Autumn to 1888, the single year this catalogue assigns to Arles and the largest of the ten: 135 works carry it. Three titles here name the Alyscamps, the Roman burial avenue at Arles, and the record spells it two different ways — Alyscamps once and Alychamps twice. All three are dated 1888. A catalogue that silently normalised the spelling would be tidier and would misreport what the sources say.
What the record gives
The canvas measures 72 by 91 centimetres and is held by the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, which holds fourteen of the works dated 1888. The measured palette reads as green and yellow.
The year in one line of arithmetic
Of the 135 works dated 1888, yellow is a dominant family in ninety-three, green in sixty-five and blue in twenty-six — the highest count for blue in any year here. Brown, which dominated eighteen of twenty-five works in 1884, dominates three.
